Hippocampus erectus

Also known as 'lined seahorse', 'northern seahorse' or 'southern seahorse' (both northern and southern seahorses are H. erectus, the name depends on where they are found and if their fry are benthic or pelagic.

H. erectus grow to approximately 6-7" in length. Although they tend to be shorter than H. reidi, they have much broader chests. Their coronet may be low with a triangular wedge, ridge-like or raised with sharp edges. They may have well developed spines called cirri. The cirri may increase or decrease depending on their environment. They usually have relatively short snouts - snouths are typically less than half head length.

In the wild, H. erectus along the east coast of North America, as far north as Nova Scotia as well as the east and west coasts of South America, as far south as Venezuela. They have also been found off the coast of Ireland and Great Britain. They are commonly found in relatively shallow water (10-70m) among seagrass, sponges and floating sargassum.

Our H. erectus generally have benthic fry, hich hitch at, or near, birth and are considered among the easiest of seahorses to raise.

Our H. erectus are captive bred and tank raised. Recommended temperature is 68-75F with occasional temperatures up to 78F acceptable, but not recommended. Ideal temperature range, and the temperature that they have been raised at is 72-75F.

Currently the H. erectus that we have available are young adults, which are displaying genders and are approximately 3-4" long. Our H. erectus range from light tan/gold to black and may, or may not have distinct saddles. The H. erectus have a wide range of coloration depending on their mood/environment and we can not provide, or guarantee any colors.

Unless otherwise requested, even numbers of seahorses ordered will be divided equally between males and females.
