Hippocampus reidiAlso known as 'slender seahorse', 'longsnout seahorse' or 'brazillian seahorse'. H. reidi grow to approximately 7-8" in length, although larger specimens have been reported. They have a low to medium height coronet that is generally rounded and convoluted. They generally have very small, rounded spines and a long snout. They are often profusely spotted and may, or may not, have blotchy saddles across dorso-lateral surfaces. In the wild, H. reidi is found in the waters around South America and the Carribean. Their natural habitat is 15-55m depth and are often found among mangrove roots, seagrass, sponges, tunicates and somewhat rarely among stony coral. H. reidi have pelagic fry, which are very small at birth and are generally considered difficult to rear. Our H. reidi are captive bred and tank raised. Recommended temperature is 72-78F with occasional temperatures up to 80F acceptable, but not recommended. Ideal temperature range, and the temperature that they have been raised at is 75-78F. All of our available H. reidi are adults and do display genders. They are approximately 3-4" long and are generally between 4-6 months old. At this time we only have bright yellow H. reidi and they will generally stay that color. However, seahorse coloration is very much dependent on environment and mood, so color is not guaranteed. We currently have a limited quantity of XL H. reidi, which are approximately 10-12 months old and approximately 4-5" long. Additionally we have some short-tailed H. reidi available at a discounted price. The short-tailed H. reidi were born with shorter tails than the regular H. reidi. They are perfectly healthy and tend to be a bit larger than our regular size H. reidi. They do hitch, swim and behave normally and, as far as we can tell, their fry have a normal proportion of regular length tails. Unless otherwise requested, even numbers of seahorses ordered will be divided equally between males and females. If you are not an experienced aquarist, or if you have never kept seahorses before, please read our extensive FAQs before ordering!
